The Difference Between Drugs and Nutritional Approach

For what every ails you, , a person has only a few choices about what to do about it..

The Drug Approach

What a drug does is it forces the body to do something that it normally wouldn't do.. When it comes to a medication, the body reacts in certain ways to this medication and it is done in order to achieve a desirable effect. For instance, in order to balance itself and handle the effects of a drug, the body has to lower its blood pressure. If this is what you want to happen because its a blood pressure medication, it's a good thing. However, there are also various other ways the body can react to the drug and sometimes this is not such a good thing - this is called a "side effect". It is the reason someone can wind up on 4 blood pressure medications. Each drug is given in an attempt to balance another drug so as not to create the various side effects of the other drugs. It is a balancing act.

The Natural Approach

What a nutritional supplement does is give the body the actual tools it needs to fix the body.

In the case of neuropathy, it is the nerve cell that is damaged. The body needs certain tools (nutritional factors) to build healthy nerves. Drugs don't build health; they treat the symptom, not the cause of the problem.

As with our example of blood pressure, if they don't know what is causing the high blood pressure, the drug just lowers it artificially. the supplement doesn't force the blood pressure low, but addresses the cause of high blood pressure and brings your body into better balance, and the blood pressure goes to normal.

The cause of nerve damage is known - it can be the result of too much sugar in the blood, the chemicals used in cancer treatments, injury to the nerve, etc. - but one thing is known, the damage is done to the cell and this causes the pain.

You can cover this up with pain killers, or with other drugs that are manufactured to handle this, but the drugs aren't repairing anything. They are trying to forces the body to not give you pain, not give you numbness, etc., And sometimes more damage to the nerve cell might happen due to the drug or other drugs you are taking,

The Nutritional Approach

Nutritional supplements are actually vitamins and minerals that the body needs to build health. The body needs certain nutrients to function properly.

In the case of neuropathy, there are specific ingredients needed by the body to build healthy nerves. These are the supplements you want to take.

Another difference is that if you are taking a drug and just covering up symptoms, you have to continue to take the drug to get relief and sometimes even have to increase the drug to get the same relief.

If you take natural supplements, the body can build health, and as long as you don't do anything to create the problem  again, there is an end to taking the supplements.

What are nutritional deficiencies and what do they do to your health?

A deficiency is basically a nutrient that your body does not have enough of to function properly.

What if you forgot to put enough oil in you car? Despite the fact that it was getting the air, gas, functioning spark plugs and good combustion, the car wouldn’t work properly. Sure the piston would go up and down and the car would move forward – just like normal. But soon the engine might run a little hot. Down in the engine different things might start happening. The rings around the piston that stopped oil from getting up into the combustion area might be giving way. The normal straight camshaft might start to bend a little. The engine just won’t work right. Perhaps the car will need a small repair, or maybe a major overhaul – or ignored the engine will just seize up and “die”.

It’s the same with your body – except that you can’t just buy another engine and repairs made to a damaged body might not put things back together again.

Let’s look at some of the many varied things that can happen when you don’t put the needed nutrients into the body, and wind up with a deficiency.

Gingivitis is created when plague (sticky deposits of bacteria, mucus and food particles) adheres to the teeth, hardens and irritates the gum. The accumulation causes the gums to become infected and swollen. As the gums swell, pockets form between the gums and the teeth and act as a trap for more plague. Irritated gums bleed and eventually start to recede.

This irritation can be fought by introducing Vitamin C, which fights the formation of plaque.

Now gingivitis, untreated, can progress to periodontal disease, which means loose teeth and false teeth. Seems like it would be easier just to get enough C. C would have fought the formation of plaque to begin with.

Does that sound too easy? Remember in the fast food lifestyle that we live in, we need a Vitamin C to fight the many problems in that lifestyle – processed foods, polluted air, etc. You need enough so that your gums get enough.

Vitamin B12 comes from meat, eggs, fish and milk, but not everyone eats these and they do not eat enough to fight the depletion that happens from day to day living. Alcohol, coffee, tobacco to name a few can also deplete the body of vitamin B12.

What happens when you have a deficiency of Vitamin B12? It can bring about nerve degeneration. Vitamin B12 supports the sheathing that protects nerve cells. Damage to the nerve sheathing can produce numbness, tingling and the pain. It’s called neuropathy. Neuropathy can be a side effect of cancer treatments, certain medications, toxins, diabetes, and many other things. And the funny part about it is that all reasons one can get neuropathy could have been prevented in the first place with the proper nutrients.

We have all heard the problems from someone smoking, but even if you smoke, you can still take vitamins to compensate for the depletion of vitamins that it causes.

There are a lot of problems that deficiency causes. One of the reasons for the website is to help you understand those deficiencies and allow you to fix nutritional deficiencies and build good health.

Remember when you build good health, disease tends to fade away.

The HCG DIet - Review

We first have to say that when building health, people thing about losing weight.  But that's backwards.   You don't lose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to lose weight.   Is this a diet that will help you lose weight, or will hit build health?

Click here for a Dr. Berg Video about this Diet

The Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission issued warning letters today to seven companies that market over-the-counter weight loss products containing the homeopathic version of the hormone HCG, calling for these companies to stop selling and marketing these unapproved drugs.

HCG or Human chorionic gonadotrpin (HCG), otherwise known as a fertility hormone, is produced in women's placentas and is also found in pregnant women's urine. The hormone is FDA-approved only as a prescription injection drug to treat some cases of infertility and for select male hormone imbalances.

Here's the scoop! Since there was some evidence that the actual hormone does produce weight loss, some marketers made a jump and said the homeopathic version of the hormone would work too. Just because something is similar does not make it the same. Homeopathic remedies are extremely diluted versions of a substance. No studies were done on this and now they are being busted.

Anyone who goes on a 500 calorie diet will lose some temporary weight, however, the danger in low calorie diets is that when you lower calories, you at the same time lower nutrients in those calories. This is why it is difficult to tell a person the exact amount of calories one requires.

You could have a diet of 2000 calories and consumer virtually no nutrition and have a diet of 400 calories and have a tremendous amount of nutrition. Going on the HGC diet is harmful, mainly because they are not looking at the basic nutrient requirements we need. This creates starvation, fatigue and organ stress, which will sooner or later slow your metabolism to a snails pace. I mean think about it...let's take potassium. Our bodies need 4700mg per day. This would equate to at least 7-10 cups of vegetables. Your body also need B12, and iodine and about 33 additional nutrients.

I could create 10 diets all based on the 500 calorie diet and add a gimmick of pressing on the left toe for 3 minutes or dancing on your roof and maybe some people would try it, but it's the 500 calories that will create the VERY temporary weight drop.

What if I were to tell you that I had a pill, that you could take, that would totally get rid of any type of sweet cravings, and all you had to do was take that, and eat a chocolate cake and you wouldn’t crave any sweets what-so-ever? That would solve it right? Well, today I want to talk about the HCG diet. You’ve probably heard about it. Hopefully you haven’t tried it, because, why isn’t anyone asking the question, “If it really worked; if it really burned fat—taking that hormone, HCG, would melt the fat off, why do they have to combine it with the 500 calorie diet? I will tell you right now, anyone that consumed 500 calories, will lose weight eventually and especially if they eat all protein. Basically, it’s going to be another fad that people do.

The thing is, when you’re taking the HCG hormone and counting your calories, you’re going to destroy your metabolism; it’s going to shut down your metabolism. Your body’s going to compensate. I’ve had people lose a lot of weight on that eating plan, but it comes right back. So you really have to eat long term because what’s the sense of doing a diet to lose it when it comes right back—and actually damage your metabolism. I highly urge you not go on that diet, simply because it doesn’t align with the philosophy of getting healthy to lose weight, it’s actually a very unhealthy diet. So, always ask the question when you’re doing a diet, you know? Does it make sense? Does it align with getting healthy? That diet does not.

Think long term - think health - think nutrients that support a healthy body. If you want the ultimate in healthy diets, get my book, The 7 Principles of Fat Burning. This way, when you lose the weight "in a healthy way", the weight stays off!

Remember to eat for your health, not for your taste buds.

What is herbal medicine?

I’ve seen confusion as regards to supplements and vitamins and herbs. They seem to be used interchangeably.

Supplementation means that you are supplementing your diet with what the body needs but isn’t getting from food you eat.

In our article, Health Conditions – an Introduction it is stated under Ingredients for Health “There are forty nutrients that cannot be made in the body. They are essential fatty acids, 15 vitamins, 14 minerals, and 10 amino acids. Collectively these forty nutrients are spoken of as the body's requirements. From these our bodies synthesize an estimated 10,000 different compounds essential to the maintenance of health. All the forty nutrients work together; therefore, the lack of any one might result in the underproduction of hundreds of these essential compounds. Probably no one nutrient is ever totally lacking from an otherwise adequate diet, but partial simultaneous deficiencies of many nutrients is common.”

Thus, you supplement with these vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids. Knowing that the body will repair itself, if it had the right tools, we can see how natural healing comes about. An example is neuropathy or nerve damage. The body needs specific B vitamins and Vitamin D to repair nerves. Thus, given the right vitamins, the body will address and repair the nerves. There are many examples of this.

But what about herbal supplements? They are not part of the essential nutrients for health. Are these the same sort of supplementation?

How do Herbs Work?

Herbs are referred to as the green pharmacy. Herbs are used to replace or enhance pharmaceuticals (be careful though that you’ve checked with your pharmacist before you mix a drug and an herbal remedy).

Herbs are more natural. Herbs are not chemicals. They can be taken as compresses, teas or infusions. They are also available as extracts in many herbal remedies you might find in your health food store or on the internet.

Herbs are medicinal remedies. Herbs were used by medical doctors and taught in medical school before 1920. In 1920 the schools were standardized to make the standard for “modern” medicine to be pharmaceutical drugs and surgery much to the delight of the pharmaceutical companies no doubt (Note: homeopathy was also taught in medical schools before 1920).

Herbs can help the body to recover, but you always need to know that you have to address the underlying cause of the problem and get the body to heal itself. The body needs its ingredients for health which is the forty nutrients mentioned above.
