SWOLLEN GUMS – Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Swollen gums can be difficult to control if not properly managed. If you have recently been told that you have gum disease, or periodontal disease, you’re likely suffering from swollen gums as a result.

It is estimated by the CDC that in the US, 50% of all adults over 30 have some degree of the disease. The numbers are startling and sign of how important it is to keep gums healthy.

Some research has shown that it is tied to other diseases such as cardiovascular issues and diabetes.

So what actually causes swollen gums?

The bottom line is that mouths are very dirty places. They are rife with millions of bacteria. Along with mucus and particles, they form plaque that builds up on teeth, gums and down into the pockets around your teeth

If left for a period of time, these bacteria start to cause inflammation and damage to the gum tissue, causing red, swollen and sometimes bleeding gums.

Proper brushing and cleaning can seriously cut down on that bacterial plaque build-up, but it isn’t always easy to completely remove. It if isn’t removed however, it can also harden to form “tartar”, which is far too strong to be removed yourself at home.
At this level, only a professional with professional strength tools can chip away at it… so prevention is always the best option

Gingivitis and Swollen Gums

Tartar, bacteria and plaque build up if left untreated can be the most harmful element of any formerly healthy mouth.

The longer it is left on the tooth surface, the more damage it does. bacteria breeding on teeth and gums can cause issues with swollen gums and lead to gingivitis.

Gingivitis can be reversed with regular home tooth care. It does not involve bone, tissue or tooth loss at this stage

Periodontitis and Swollen Gums

Though gingivitis itself is not a drastic situation, if left untreated it can eventually lead to periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammation that affects gum tissue and the supporting bones. Without treatment, it can lead to pain, swollen gums, discomfort, difficulty eating and even tooth loss.

With swollen gums at this stage, the tissue around the teeth starts to pull away from the tooth. (Periodontal means "around the tooth") This can open into pockets where infection can easily start.

Naturally the body starts to fight the bacteria as plaque extends below the gum line. this process causes bacterial toxins to start breaking down bones and tissues that secure teeth in place.
At this stage, without prompt treatment, you are now at risk of permanently losing your teeth and losing your gum tissue. This is also where teeth may have to be removed due to decay

The Risks of Swollen Gums

There are some definite risk factors when it comes to getting gingivitis. Here are some that should be considered:

1 Hormone changes in girls/women. The changes a young woman goes through from childhood to adulthood can make gingivitis easier to start. Gums become more sensitive and require more care. Swelling can occur and should be a first sign of needed care.

2 Smoking. Smoking has been linked to gum disease and swelling. It can help to put stress on the entire mouth and increase problems. It also can lessen some treatment’s effectiveness.

3 Diabetes. Diabetes is another illness that affects the entire body. One way is to increase the risk of infections, namely in the gums.

4 Medications. Some medications are contributors to gingivitis. Even OTC meds can increase problems. They reduce the flow of mouth saliva, which can protect the mouth. This makes it more vulnerable to infection and bacteria, and prone to gums that swell as a result. Also, some medicines can cause abnormal gums by encouraging growth. This can make it hard to keep them clean and infections can ensue.

5 Genetics. Genetics play a part in gum disease too. That is not to say that everyone whose parents have dental issues will suffer the same, but it does put them at a higher risk. They should immediately put together a qualified and effective dental health plan and stick to it

Who can get swollen gums?

Normally, people in their 30s or 40s start to show signs of gum disease in the form of minor gum swelling.

More men than women are typically sufferers. Still, anyone can get it without proper dental care.

It is important to see a dentist and let them, or a dental hygienist, properly clean teeth regularly. It is even more important to have a home ritual to keep teeth and gums healthy.

Signs of gum disease

So how do you know if you have gum disease?

Of course if you have been doing all the right things, you are lessening your chances of issues, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have them.

Here are some signs to watch out for:
▪ Loose teeth
▪ Overly-sensitive teeth
▪ Any pain or discomfort with teeth
▪ Bad breath that is consistent regardless of home treatments
▪ Swollen gums
▪ Red gums
▪ Tender gums
▪ Painful chewing
▪ Bleeding gums

What can you do about your Swollen Gums?

There are ways to mitigate gum swelling and gum disease by maintaining a good dental routine and killing the offending bacteria

Here are the most important ones:

▪ Brush and floss regularly. By far the most important thing you can do to avoid gum disease and swollen gums is to have a good dental care routine at home. You should be brushing and flossing twice daily—once in the morning and once before bed. You also can consider short brushing stints after each meal.

▪ Use anti-bacterial dental products. Use a good ‘high strength’ anti-bacterial solution like Dental Pro 7 to kill and suppress the bacteria attacking your teeth and gums, also consider an ‘alcohol free’ antiseptic mouthwash after brushing

Warning: Avoid ‘most’ commercial anti-bacterial toothpastes – 99% of the ones found at your local grocery store contain potential carcinogens (cancer causing agents) and hormone modifiers, avoid any toothpaste’s containing the ingredient ‘trisoclan’ especially

For more information on the horrible chemicals in most toothpaste and which you should avoid, check out this article

▪ Avoid SLS – sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a harsh foaming agent used in most toothpastes that can further irritate swollen gum tissue, Use a SLS free toothpaste or an ‘all Natural’ toothpaste instead

▪ Make an appointment to see your dentist regularly. Your dentist should help you to keep on track with issues you can’t manage on your own. He or she will help you to come up with a plan to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

▪ Use OTC aids. There are effective natural remedies you can find.

One is Dental Pro 7. This is a high-strength dental concentrate that is proven to kill bacteria within the mouth and help mitigate bad breath, bleeding gums, tooth decay, gum infection, swollen gums, gingivitis and sore gums.

▪ Brush Softly – whenever you have swollen gums, ALWAYS brush really softly with a soft bristle toothbrush, hard, vigorous brushing is the number 1 way to make swollen gums even worse

Conclusion

In the end, keeping your teeth and mouth healthy are the primary ways to avoid swollen gums and gum disease in general.
This includes having a good home care routine. If you want healthy teeth be sure to prioritize your gums.

They are going to serve you for a long time, so take good care of them
